About
Hi! I'm Mary Cyrus, the owner and the photographer you'll see at any shoot you hire me for. I've had a camera in hand since I was about 13, and it's still a little unreal to me that I can make my living doing something I'm so passionate about. It's extremely gratifying to create family heirlooms and to preserve memories, and that's what I strive to do with every wedding, event, and portrait session. I am now serving my clients full time.
I worked for some years as the Head of Photography for a national retail chain, which was great, but my real love is for capturing authentic moments between people. I predominately act as the "fly on the wall" at weddings, photographing the day as it unfolds - the best man fumbling the rings, the flower girl singing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" into the DJ's microphone, the bride's mom & siblings tearing up during the father-daughter dance, an epic rendition of Gangnam Style unfolding on the dance floor... whatever happens, I'm ready to freeze that moment for you to look back on for years to come.
I enjoy photographing all sorts of sessions: families, babies, children, teens, high school seniors, maternity, bridal, engagement, couples & more. I try to capture candid, real moments in everything that I photograph. I provide direction, but do my best to keep everything natural & comfortable. Even those who "don't like being photographed" won't find my sessions painful!
When I'm not out photographing clients or editing sessions in my home office, I'm wrangling my two goofy great danes, coexisting with a cat, and being a homebody with my husband Opie at our home in Allen. I enjoy gardening, and am slowly but surely getting my front garden beds how I want them, despite an ongoing battle with the neighborhood rabbit population. The backyard is a lost cause for gardening with 300 collective pounds of dog romping around back there. I'm an avid amateur genealogy researcher, and I have nearly 3000 people linked in my family tree. I'm a celtic fiddler, and enjoy a connection with my Irish, Scottish & Welsh heritage through music.
These are a few of my favorite things:
Books: Pillars of the Earth; The Blue Sword; The Illustrated Man; Purple Hibiscus; The Homecoming Saga; Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir; The Wild Ways; American Gods; Good Omens: The Nice & Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch; Parasol Protectorate; The BFG; Jane Eyre; The Secret Garden; Harry Potter; The Lark & The Wren; The Beka Cooper Series
TV shows: Battlestar Galactica; Firefly; House; Vikings; Louie; Orange is the New Black; The League; First 48; Project Runway; Robot Chicken; Survivorman; Life Below Zero; Alaska: The Last Frontier; South Park; Planet Earth
Movies: Waking Ned Devine; O Brother, Where Art Thou; The Big Lebowski; 10 Things I Hate About You; Rear Window; Office Space; Serenity; Garden State; The Princess Bride; My Big Fat Greek Wedding; Latcho Drom; Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Bands & Musicians: James Taylor; Joni Mitchell; The Barra MacNeils; Emilíana Torrini; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Alison Krauss; The Cranberries; Neko Case; Al Green; Avicii; Daft Punk; Beòlach; Lindsey Stirling; Carole King; Patsy Cline; Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys; Nickel Creek; Steely Dan; The Band; Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins
Sometimes I'm a redhead, sometimes I'm a blonde. My husband always rocks a long, red beard. We're both always pale & freckly. You won't see Opie at your session though... He's an engineer. I'm the artist and the "people person" in this couple (as he puts it).
